Soffit Installation

If you’re planning a home exterior upgrade or noticing peeling paint, pest entry points, or rotting wood under your roof overhang, it’s time to take a close look at your soffit installation. Properly installed soffits protect your home’s rafters from moisture, improve attic ventilation, and give your roofline a clean, finished appearance.

At All Stars Roofing — Burlington’s trusted roofing contractor serving Oakville, Hamilton, Mississauga, and the surrounding communities — we’ve completed hundreds of soffit and fascia projects across Ontario. In this guide, we share our professional process so you know exactly what goes into a quality soffit installation.

💡 Pro Tip: Soffit installation works hand-in-hand with fascia and eavestrough work. Addressing all three at the same time saves time and money. Learn more about our Soffit, Fascia & Eavestrough services.

What Is Soffit — and Why Does It Matter?

The soffit is the finished surface covering the underside of a roof overhang. Beyond aesthetics, it serves three critical functions. When combined with quality siding installation, new soffit dramatically boosts curb appeal and long-term home value.

•       Attic ventilation: Vented soffit panels allow air to circulate under the roof deck, reducing moisture buildup and extending roof life. Learn more from the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) on proper attic ventilation standards.

•       Pest protection: Without soffit, open rafter tails become entry points for birds, squirrels, and insects.

•       Weather resistance: Soffit shields rafter tails and roof framing from rain, snow, and UV damage — critical in Ontario’s climate.

Soffit vs. Fascia: Understanding the Difference

Soffit is the horizontal panel covering the underside of the overhang. Fascia is the vertical trim board along the roofline’s front edge that anchors gutters and seals the roof edge. Together with the eavestrough, they form a complete eave system. All Stars Roofing handles all three as part of our complete Soffit, Fascia & Eavestrough service.

Soffit Materials: Which Type Is Right for You?

Vinyl Soffit

The most popular choice for Ontario homes. Lightweight, moisture-resistant, never needs painting, and handles freeze-thaw cycles well. Most All Stars Roofing projects use high-quality vinyl.

Aluminum Soffit

Durable, fire-resistant, and holds paint well. Ideal for colour-matching your trim or siding. Slightly more expensive but offers premium longevity.

Wood Soffit

Traditional look, but requires regular painting and is susceptible to rot. Ensure it’s properly primed and sealed if chosen.

Fiber Cement Soffit

The look of wood without the maintenance. Impact-resistant, fire-resistant, and holds paint longer. Learn about sustainable building material options from the Canada Green Building Council. Heavier to install but an excellent long-term investment.

How to Install Soffit: Step-by-Step

Here is the professional process we follow at All Stars Roofing when installing soffit on a standard horizontal eave:

1.    Inspect and Prepare the Eave Area. Remove old panels. Check rafter tails for rot, mold, or insect damage. Replace compromised wood before proceeding.

2.    Install the F-Channel on the Wall. Snap a level chalk line around the perimeter. Nail the F-channel along that line every 16 inches.

3.    Attach the Fascia or Outer Channel. Nail the fascia board to the rafter tails. Ensure it’s plumb and level across the entire run.

4.    Measure and Cut Soffit Panels. Measure the eave depth and subtract 1/4” for expansion. Cut panels with a circular saw or aviation snips.

5.    Slide Panels Into Channels. Insert one end into the wall F-channel, press the opposite edge into the fascia-side channel.

6.    Fasten and Interlock Panels. Nail through the nailing hem at centre. Leave 1/16” play for thermal expansion. Lock the interlocking edge of each next panel.

7.    Seal Corners and Gaps. Install corner posts or mitered trim. Apply exterior caulk at all seams.

8.    Final Inspection. Check that all panels are flush, vents are unobstructed, and the fascia line is straight.

⚠️ Safety Note: Always work with a partner on a ladder. For second-storey or steep overhangs, we strongly recommend hiring a professional. Contact All Stars Roofing for a free, no-obligation estimate.

How to Install a Sloping Soffit

A sloping (raked) soffit follows the pitch of the roofline rather than running horizontally. Common on gable ends. The Ontario Building Code outlines ventilation requirements that apply to raked soffits as well.

9.    Determine the Roof Pitch Angle. Use a digital angle finder or speed square. Example: a 6/12 pitch = approx. 26.6 degrees.

10.  Install Angled F-Channel on the Gable Wall. Snap a line following the roofline angle. Mount F-channel every 12–16 inches.

11.  Cut Soffit Panels at the Matching Pitch Angle. Set your saw bevel to match the pitch. Use a test piece first to save material.

12.  Work From Bottom Up. Always install from lowest point upward so panels lap correctly and water cannot track underneath.

13.  Trim and Seal the Peak. Trim the final panel at the ridge. Seal all exposed edges with exterior caulk.

How to Install Fascia and Soffit Together

Always install fascia before soffit. The fascia provides the outer receiving edge for soffit panels. For complete exterior protection, consider pairing this work with professional siding installation — our team can coordinate all three for maximum efficiency.

Fascia steps: Remove old fascia and inspect rafter tails. Cut new fascia to length. Nail into each rafter tail with two galvanized nails. Butt joints must land on a rafter. Then proceed with soffit installation — panels slot into the groove at the back of the fascia for a flush, weatherproof eave assembly.

Common Soffit Installation Mistakes to Avoid

•       Skipping ventilation: Solid soffit without vents causes moisture buildup in the attic.

•       Ignoring expansion gaps: Always leave the recommended gap at panel ends.

•       Nailing too tight: Leaves panels rigid and causes buckling in heat.

•       Installing over rotted wood: Always repair the underlying structure first.

•       Improper corner treatment: Use proper trim pieces and caulk all transitions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who installs soffits?

Professional roofing contractors or experienced exterior specialists. All Stars Roofing handles complete soffit installation across Burlington, Oakville, Hamilton, Mississauga, and Milton.

How do you install a sloping soffit?

Measure the roof pitch, cut panels at the matching bevel angle, mount an angled F-channel to the gable wall, and work from the lowest point upward. See the sloping soffit section above. The Ontario Building Code provides ventilation ratio requirements relevant to all soffit types.

What is the difference between soffit and fascia?

Soffit is horizontal (underside of overhang), fascia is vertical (front edge of rafter tails). See our dedicated Soffit, Fascia & Eavestrough service page for full details on both components.

Do I need vented or solid soffit?

Most homes benefit from vented soffit. CMHC and the Ontario Building Code require a specific ventilation ratio — your contractor can calculate the correct balance for your attic.

How long does soffit installation take?

professional crew can complete a full soffit replacement on an average bungalow in one day. Larger homes or combined soffit, fascia, and eavestrough projects may take two days.
