Which Eavestroughs Are Right For Your Roof?

It’s likely that you’ve never given your eavestroughs a second thought—they’re not the most exciting feature of your house. However, they are imperative to your home’s health, and should be picked with care to avoid damage.

What are eavestroughs?

Also known as gutters, eavestroughs prevent water damage to your foundation. They collect runoff rain and snow from your roof and divert it safely away from your home.

Types of eavestroughs and their benefits

Eavestroughs come in two forms: sectional and seamless. Sectional eavestroughs come in different pieces and are attached to your fascia board with hangers. They’re then joined together with joiner pieces, resulting in simple and quick installation. This being said, they do have room for leakage if their seams become damaged.

Seamless eavestroughs, while more expensive, are easier to customize and do not leak. These are made specifically for your home and come in a variety of different colours and materials.

Materials

Eavestroughs are available in a multitude of materials, including vinyl, aluminum, and stainless steel.

  • Vinyl is the least expensive option and does not rust or corrode. However, it may degrade sooner than other materials: in extremely cold weather, it can crack.

  • Aluminum is both very cost-effective and weather resistant (unlike vinyl). Additionally, it can be painted a variety of colours to match your home’s aesthetic. However, it is easily damaged, and may need to be replaced frequently.

  • While it is the most expensive option, stainless steel is the sturdiest choice, and is able to best withstand Canadian winters. If you’re willing to pay more for your eavestroughs, this is the optimal choice for you.
